From a child’s perspective, everything would be perfect as they run around and play with their new furry friend. As a parent, on the other hand, you may think differently. Although some may also enjoy the company of a pet, parents see nothing more than just extra responsibility. However, if you’ve recently had a baby, having a pet around can do wonders.

It Teaches Them Responsibility Early On
Many children are often rambunctious during their first few years of life. As such, they often look for things to do in order to keep their minds occupied. If your child has too much energy and not much to do, then having a pet to take care of is perfect.

Taking care of a pet is a big responsibility. Playing, feeding, watering, walking and bathing can seem like a lot, but it gives your child something to do and teaches them responsibility.

Boosts Their EQ
EQ is the abbreviated term for emotional intelligence. Being able to take care of a dog allows your child to learn how to be more compassionate and care about others. In addition, your child will also build their self-esteem. The responsibility that comes with taking care of a pet will help make them feel accomplished and have confidence in themselves.

It Makes Them Healthier
According to research done by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), children, specifically newborns, that grow up with a dog have had better immune system functions. Interestingly, a newborn that lives with a dog will experience a more mature immune system than those who do not.

Shutterstock: Alena Ozerova

It Will Keep Your Children Active and Off Screens
Parents who are looking to keep their children active, healthy and tech-free will love this one. Fulfilling your child’s wish of adopting a pet will do exactly what you want your kids to do. Not only will playing with a dog or cat give your child their exercise, it also helps reduce the risk of obesity.

Getting a pet for your child may seem like an unnecessary expense, but it’s actually be for their own good. Your child will have a new companion to play with, learn how to be a better person, take pride in their accomplishments and stay healthy. Be sure to give a second thought before declining their request for a puppy.

At one point or another, every child will ask if they can have a pet.
