As a parent, it can sometimes be hard to communicate effectively with your child. Many children are easily distracted and don’t really listen to what their parents are saying. The following guide walks you through a few things that you can do to ensure that you communicate as effectively with your child as possible at all times.

Get Down to Their Level
A huge mistake that many parents make is to talk at their children rather than talking to them. They simply start talking without making sure that they have their children’s attention. Take the time to get down to their level so that you are looking at them eye to eye. This ensures that you have their undivided attention and shows that you are giving them the same respect that you expect them to give to you. It can also make whatever you are talking about seem less intimidating. Looking up at someone when they are talking to you can seem very scary to some children.

Plan What You Are Going to Say
If at all possible, it’s a good idea to plan what you are going to say before talking to your child, if you have something important to discuss. You want to be sure that you speak clearly and concisely. You will only be able to hold your child’s attention for so long and getting directly to the point of the conversation is important. You also want to be sure that you speak in terms that they understand.

Allow Your Child to Voice their Concerns
Another mistake that many parents make is to assume that they can simply tell their child something and that will be the end of the conversation. Many children want to know why something is the way it is. Children are inquisitive and curious. It’s best to take the time to be prepared to answer the questions that they may have to ensure that they are completely informed about the topic and feel comfortable with it. This allows you to start to create an open dialogue with your child. You want him or her to feel comfortable coming to talk to you about anything that happens in their life in the future.

It can take time to ensure that you say things in a positive tone and try to be patient when your child asks numerous questions about something that you are discussing. Remaining calm and respectful at all times teaches your child how they should talk to people. You need to lead by example when it comes to raising your child.
